Assessment, Collection and Disposal of Hazardous Liquids

Not everyone is 100% aware of what are in some containers especially in old storerooms and garages. In these instances we will assess the contents and document them.

Meeting your legal obligations
We provide transfer notes specific to these materials for your obligatory record keeping.

Hazardous materials are subject to established UK legal frameworks, including the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Hazardous Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2005, which require:

  • Classification and proper waste coding
  • Use of duly authorised carriers
  • Secure containment and tracking
  • Disposal at licensed hazardous waste facilities

DEFRA and the Environment Agency maintain detailed guidance regarding:

  • Identification of hazardous waste
  • Packaging, labeling, and segregation
  • Record-keeping and transfer notes specific to these materials

Hazardous waste poses significant risks to human health and the environment.
Mixing them with general recyclables can result in contamination, regulatory breaches, and severe enforcement penalties.

Every time hazardous liquids like these are dumped down a sink, storm drain, toilet or illegally dumped, they don’t just disappear — they *travel*. And the damage they cause along the way can be devastating:

Here’s What Really Happens:

1. Water Pollution:
These substances contain toxic chemicals that water treatment plants aren’t designed to handle. That means they often end up contaminating rivers, lakes, and even groundwater. This can poison fish and wildlife, and potentially enter *our* drinking water supply.

2. Pipe and Infrastructure Damage:
Corrosive substances like acids and certain fuels can eat away at plumbing and municipal sewage systems, leading to costly repairs and dangerous leaks — costs that often get passed back to the community.

3. Fire and Explosion Risks:
Fuels and oils are highly flammable. Pouring them down a drain can create dangerous vapors that build up in enclosed sewage systems, potentially leading to fires or explosions.

4. Legal Consequences:
Disposing of hazardous materials improperly isn’t just unsafe — it’s illegal. Fines for such actions can be steep, even for first-time offenders.

Waste Duty of Care: Code of practice

This Code of Practice applies to you if you produce, carry, keep, dispose of, treat, import or have control of waste in England or Wales.

The law requires anyone dealing with waste to keep it safe, make sure it’s dealt with responsibly and only given to businesses authorised to take it.

If you’re authorised or registered in Scotland or Northern Ireland but you store, transport or transfer waste in England or Wales, you should also take account of this code.

This code is issued under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
